Lance with CVSA team jersey

The news that Lance Armstrong would commence his comeback to cycling to promote cancer awareness (the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign) at the 2009 Tour Down Under was the stimulus for the cancer advocacy group, Cancer Voices SA, to ‘get on their bikes’. By recruiting riders to a Cancer Voices SA team for the Mutual Community Challenge Ride, we raised awareness of cancer and promoted Cancer Voices SA.

Lance’s personal story is truly inspirational, showing courage and determination to overcome cancer and fight back to win (7 times!!) the Tour de France, which is arguably the world’s most gruelling sporting event; (read Lance’s Story ).

"Why I Ride". Lance outlines why he is racing to make cancer a global priority.

    • You don't need to have had cancer, or know anyone with cancer to join the team.
Some of our riders are cancer survivors, partners, family, friends, neighbours or supporters of someone with cancer.
  • Our riders participate in a number of cycling events throughout the year.
  • We have riders at all levels of experience and fitness.
  • We have regular training rides led by professional trainers from EFM Health Club-Stonyfell. (Thank you Ben Flannagan and other trainers for your support).
  • BikeSA support the Cancer Voices SA team by providing BikeSA membership benefits at their corporate rate.Jo West advising on jersey design

Our aim is to 'raise a voice for people affected by cancer' whenever you ride with us or with our team name on your jersey.

We are now working on the design for our own jersey. Thank you Jo West, of West Creative Graphic Design, for your support. (Photo: Left to right, Jo West, Jim Vlahakis and Ashleigh Moore discuss the jersey design. Feb 2010).

RIDES CALENDAR
Dates for 'team rides' including events we enter are listed below.
Check for latest updates on rides, times etc at Adelaide Cyclists Cancer Voices SA Discussion Forum
Rides will be on Sunday’s as follows:

Training Rides will be held every month on a Sunday, starting at 8am from St Peters College car park, off Hallet Rd, Stonyfell.
These Rides will be led by Ben Flannagan (from EFM, Stonyfell) and will be split into 2-3 groups based upon speed, experience and numbers attending. Each Training Ride will include a 15 minute pre-ride training/briefing session by Ben (eg on ride techniques, etc that can then be practiced).
Training Rides will be scheduled to not conflict with the large community rides, Grand Slams (run by BikeSA), cycling events, etc.
All rides are 'not mandatory' and by having more rides we can provide more opportunities to get on your bike, ride with good mates while raising awareness around cancer.

Group Rides will be available every Sunday.
Meet and ride with others from the CVSA Team any Sunday at 8am at St Peters College car park, Stonyfell.
The Group Rides will be a less formal arrangement and not led by Ben or Ashleigh - although we may be there for a ride.
Whoever rolls up can then decide a leader and route at the time.
Those not riding in the Grand Slam and other events can still meet those Sundays at St Peters College.

Everyone is WELCOME especially our new Team members. The Team continues to grow, so we may split into fast and slower groups.
Our usual arrangements will be a few hours riding into the Hills, followed by a brew at Taylors Blend on Hallet Rd, Stonyfell.
(If we can’t fit into Taylors Blend we will adjourn to the Place Next Door on the cnr of Glynburn and Greenhill Roads, 'Feathers' roundabout).

Email Updates will keep you informed of other rides that Cancer Voices SA Riders will be teaming up to enter.
To JOIN the Cancer Voices SA Cycling Team, phone Ashleigh Moore on 0403 925 599 or send your details to info@cancervoicessa.org.au

Cancer Voices SA - Cycling Team - background

We started training together in early December 2008, in preparation for the 2009 Tour Down Under Community Challenge Ride. Thanks Ben Flannagan from Stonyfell EFM Health Club, for volunteering to take us on training rides. The training tips and encouragement from these rides helped many to achieve a ‘personal challenge’ way beyond expectation. Follow our journey... About Cancer Voices SA

Cancer Voices SA aims to: better represent the views of those affected by cancer, promote these perspectives to health professionals, government and the public. ensure patients and supporters are receiving the best possible information, treatment and care. work to increase funding for prevention, detection, research and improved treatments.

With approximately 1 in 2 people in Australia diagnosed with cancer at some time in their life, almost everyone is affected by cancer, whether it is themselves, family, a friend, colleague or neighbour. Cancer Voices SA (CVSA) focus on Advocacy, Involvement, Awareness and Information to represent the views of those affected by cancer.

Currently most CVSA activity is focussed on facilitating access to world’s best-practice cancer treatment and care which also take into account the mental and social effects of cancer, not just the physical symptoms. We seek coordinated, patient-focussed and multidisciplinary care, with high quality information and communication, across the spectrum of diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and palliative care – it is about looking after the whole person beyond their clinical cancer treatment.
